In my Evanston there are a lot of multicultural people. In my classroom you can see students of many races and cultural backgrounds. I love learning about new traditions from friends who come from different countries and religions. Downstairs from my apartment lives a Nigerian family that I see from time to time. You can tell by their accent that they are from Nigeria, but otherwise they blend right into my diverse neighborhood. I see them as I leave my building and walk down the street, smelling the aroma of chicken being fried from Popeye’s. I feel the wind like a refrigerator against my cheek and ears, with cold air freezing my skin as I walk. My Mom’s car is parked across the street and we get in quickly and turn up the heat. We are headed to the YMCA, where I go to play basketball. I hear swishing sounds of the ball flying through the basket. I love to go to the local gym at YMCA to play ball with my friends after school. We play a lot of pickup games, meeting new people from different schools in the area. Layups are my specialty. My team depends on me to score baskets so we can win. After an hour, I’m tired, so I go home with my Mom and get ready for dinner. |
